Shotokan Karate Instruction

The Chuseikan Dojo offers beginner-intermediate Shotokan Karate instruction as part of Tampa Bay Shotokan under the South Atlantic Karate Affiliation of Japan Karate Association World Federation (JKA/WF), America.

Instruction includes a traditional Shotokan Karate-do syllabus, focusing on three elements: kihon (fundamentals), kata (forms), and kumite (sparring).

  • Kata and Kihon, by nature, can be practiced solo in small or large spaces. These skills are ideal for training key overarching principles such as martial awareness and focus (zanshin) which are also key Aikido principles.

  • Kumite is done to enhance martial timing and agility. Sparring techniques will be modified to ensure safe protocol during these unusual times but family members may train at close proximity.

During the COVID crisis all classes are held via Zoom. The schedule and location are expected to change once the crisis is abated and as the membership grows.

Classes are geared towards kids 10+.  Parents and Chuseikan Adult Members are welcome to participate at the beginner-intermediate levels.  Instruction is led by Sempai Zac Atlas, Karate Shodan, an instructor at Tampa Bay Shotokan Club.  Zac Sempai also holds Shodan in Aikido through ASU, and is an active member of Aikido Chuseikan Dojo.

Members of Aikido Chuseikan Youth Program can participate in the Karate program for no additional fee.  Non-members can pay a daily visitor fee or choose to join the Aikido Chuseikan Youth Program and participate in both Karate and Aikido classes.  SAKA-JKA/WF dues paying members may also train at the Tampa Palms/Temple Terrace training locations. Currently, Tampa Bay Shotokan offers evening classes outdoors at Club Tampa Palms on or adjacent to basketball court led by Sensei Susan Bunch.
